Street Vernacular Type Exploration

“Design is everywhere” goes the popular adage in this industry, and that is rarely more prominently on display than the storefront signage of local businesses. From the sleek, familiar marks of national chains to the hand-painted lettering of the mom and pop stores, thousands of unique characters can be found on any given stretch of commercial street.

This project digitized found letterforms captured on a section of Grand Avenue in St. Paul, Minnesota to create a unique alphabet. The letters were then utilized in a pangram to display the entire alphabet in poster format.
